Tracking0, Tracking1, and Tracking2 fields in inventory are different than most other drop down list fields in BusinessMind because they are designed to work together for hierarchical grouping.

Hierarchical grouping means that the contents of the lists are linked such that the choices you get in Tracking 2 depend on the selection you made for Tracking 1, and, the choices available in Tracking 1 depend on the selection you made in Tracking 0. The selection made in each list affects the choices in the list below it. This is useful for categorizing inventory in a hierarchical manner.

Tips on what to NOT use Tracking0-2 lists for

  • Categorizing by location. BusinessMind automatically manages quantities and locations for you. Don't try to do it manually with these drop downs.

  • Attributes that change often. Hierarchical categories work best for more static types of groupings. Consider non hierarchical lists for more volatile values.

  • Don't use these lists for attributes that are not arranged in a hierarchy. Use any of the other regular lists for those.

  • Classifications that need to be different between SKUs of the same model. Tracking0-2 attributes are assigned at the model level and inherited by all SKUs of a given model.

Preparing your hierarchical attributes

We can help you configure your hierarchical lists. The first step is to prepare your hierarchy. Think of each classification you want to have as a chain of three selections linked together. Perhaps something like this ...

Bridal Jewelry > 14kt Gold > Rings
Bridal Jewelry > 14kt Gold > Earrings
Bridal Jewelry > 14kt Gold > Neck chains
Bridal Jewelry > 18kt Gold > Rings
Bridal Jewelry > 18kt Gold > Earrings
Bridal Jewelry > 18kt Gold > Neck chains
Bridal Jewelry > Platinum > Rings
Bridal Jewelry > Platinum > Earrings
Bridal Jewelry > Platinum > Neck chains
Designer Jewelry > Everyday > Rings
Designer Jewelry > Everyday > Bracelets
Designer Jewelry > Everyday > Pendants
Designer Jewelry > Evening > Earrings
Designer Jewelry > Evening > Bracelets
Designer Jewelry > Evening > Pins
etc...

An easy way to lay this out is using a spreadsheet program like Numbers or Excel. Create 3 columns and list out all the possible three level selections you would like to have.

When you are done, just submit the sheet to the DCIT Support Staff and we will load it into your system for you. Then you just log out and log in and you are ready to start using your hierarchical groupings with the Tracking0-2 fields.
